About this coinHistory

The 1800/1798 overdate large cent shows the full four-digit date repunched: 1800 punched over 1798 in the die. Both the 0s of 1800 and the underlying 9 and 8 of 1798 are visible on well-preserved examples, creating one of the more visually complex overdates in the early cent series. The Mint updated the entire date rather than just the final digit, which is unusual among large cent overdates.

The variety is cataloged in the Sheldon reference and collected as a separate die marriage from the standard 1800 and the 1800/79 overdates. Identifying the overdate requires magnification and familiarity with the specific die diagnostics. The remnants of the underlying 1798 date are most clearly visible on coins in Fine or better condition, where enough surface detail survives to show the doubled numerals.

Among 1800 large cent overdates, the 1800/1798 and the 1800/79 are both collected but differ in how much of the old date is visible and in the specific die characteristics. Both carry premiums over the standard 1800 date, with pricing scaled to the clarity of the overdate feature and the coin's overall condition.
