The 1806 large cent was struck in a mintage of 348,000 coins, a relatively modest figure that makes the date somewhat scarcer than its neighbors. The low output may reflect copper supply fluctuations or simply the Mint's production schedule for the year. Only one Sheldon die variety is recorded for the entire mintage, meaning every genuine 1806 large cent came from a single pair of dies.
A single die pair producing 348,000 coins represents hard use of those dies. Late-state examples may show die cracks, wear, or other evidence of fatigue, which specialists track as part of the die's production history. The die's life from fresh to exhausted is written across the surviving coins in progressive stages of deterioration.
The 1806 sat in the second term of Thomas Jefferson's presidency. The Embargo Act of 1807, which would devastate American maritime trade, was a year away. The large cent continued to serve as the primary copper coin in an economy that was still largely agrarian, where transactions at the local level ran on copper and small silver. The 1806 cent circulated in that economy and wore accordingly. Most surviving examples grade between Good and Fine.
The 1806 is one of the final three Draped Bust dates. After 1807, the design would give way to John Reich's Classic Head. As a penultimate date with a single die marriage and moderate scarcity, the 1806 offers more character than its reputation as a "routine date" suggests.
