The 1805 large cent was struck in a mintage of 941,116 coins, a solid output that places it among the middle tier of Draped Bust dates. The Mint had been producing the Draped Bust design for nearly a decade by 1805, and the die-cutting and striking procedures were mature. The coin is well-executed by the standards of the series, with consistent strike quality and generally good planchet metal.
The year 1805 fell during the Jefferson administration's second term, a period of relative prosperity and westward expansion. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 had doubled the nation's territory, and the Lewis and Clark expedition was making its way up the Missouri River. The large cent remained the primary small-denomination coin in daily commerce, handling retail transactions from Boston to the frontier settlements. A cent bought something tangible: a roll, a measure of milk, passage across a ferry.
Die varieties exist and are cataloged in the Sheldon reference. Four Sheldon numbers (S-267 through S-270) are known for 1805, but none carry the premiums or collector stories of the overdates and fraction errors found on neighboring years. A single problem-free 1805 in Fine satisfies the date for most collectors.
The 1805 sits near the end of the Draped Bust series. Two more years of production remained before the Classic Head design replaced it in 1808. The final Draped Bust years are generally the most available, benefiting from consistent mintages and a Mint that had long since worked out the production challenges of its early years.
