The 1807/6 Large 7 overdate large cent shows a large-sized 7 punched over a 6 in the date's final digit. The Mint repurposed an 1806 die by updating its date to 1807, and the remnant of the underlying 6 is visible beneath the 7 on well-preserved examples. The "Large 7" designation distinguishes this die from a separate overdate die that used a smaller 7 punch.
Overdates on the final year of a design type are common in early American coinage. The Mint was transitioning to the Classic Head design in 1808 and may have been exhausting its supply of Draped Bust dies in 1807, using whatever was available rather than cutting new dies for a design about to be retired.
The 1807/6 Large 7 is collected as a distinct Sheldon variety and carries a premium over standard 1807 cents. The overdate is identifiable on coins in Good or better condition, where enough detail survives in the date area to show the doubled final digit. Certification services attribute the variety and specify the large or small 7 distinction.
