About this coinHistory

The 1807 Large Fraction variety uses the larger-sized numeral punches for the reverse fraction 1/100. The distinction from the Small Fraction variety is in the height and width of the fraction digits, determined by which set of punches the engraver selected for this particular reverse die. The Large Fraction is the standard issue for the date and accounts for the majority of surviving 1807 cents.

As the final year of the Draped Bust large cent, the 1807 carries terminal-date appeal. Both the Large and Small Fraction varieties represent the last coins to carry Scot's adaptation of the Gilbert Stuart portrait. In 1808, the design gave way to John Reich's Classic Head, ending a twelve-year run that had begun in 1796. A Large Fraction 1807 in decent condition is a natural endpoint for a Draped Bust date or type set.
