The 1807/6 Small 7 overdate uses a different, more compact 7 punch than the Large 7 version. The underlying 6 is still visible, but the overlying 7 is shorter and narrower. The two 1807/6 overdates are separate dies and separate Sheldon varieties, each with its own survival population and relative scarcity.
Distinguishing the Large 7 from the Small 7 requires comparison of the final digit's size against reference images. The difference is consistent across coins from each die but can be subtle without a comparison piece. Certification services provide the attribution, specifying which 7 type the coin represents.
Both 1807/6 overdate varieties are collected alongside the non-overdate 1807 cents, giving the final Draped Bust date a variety structure that rewards specialist attention. The overdates carry premiums over the standard date, with pricing influenced by the overdate's clarity and the coin's overall condition.
