About this coinHistory

The Reverse of 1797 variety of the 1796 Draped Bust cent uses a reverse die prepared for the following year's production, paired with a 1796 obverse. The 1797-style reverse is distinguished by its wreath and lettering characteristics, which differ from the 1794 and 1795 reverse styles also used on 1796 cents.

A reverse die dated by style to 1797 appearing on a 1796 coin is less paradoxical than it might seem. Die preparation was continuous at the Mint, and dies cut late in one year were often available for use before the calendar year turned. The "Reverse of 1797" designation reflects the die's stylistic period rather than the year it was physically used, and it is entirely possible that this reverse die was cut and placed into service in late 1796.

Among the three reverse types known for 1796 Draped Bust cents, the Reverse of 1797 is collected as a separate die marriage. For a collector who wants complete variety coverage of the 1796 date, all three reverses are needed. For a type collector who wants a single 1796 Draped Bust cent, any reverse variety serves the purpose equally well.
