About this coinHistory

The 1796 Draped Bust cent with a Reverse of 1795 pairs the new Draped Bust obverse with a reverse die cut in the style of 1795 production. The 1795-style reverse has subtle differences from both the 1794 and 1797 reverses in wreath detail, lettering spacing, and fraction placement. These are distinctions that require reference images for confident identification.

Die reuse across years was standard practice at the early Mint. A reverse die that still had useful life was not retired simply because the obverse design changed. The 1796 Draped Bust cent exists with at least three different reverse styles (1794, 1795, and 1797), each representing a different reverse die pressed into service during the year's production run.

The Reverse of 1795 is available to collectors willing to search, though all 1796 Draped Bust varieties are scarce by modern standards. As the first year of a new design type, the 1796 carries collector interest that sustains pricing above what comparable mintages might otherwise suggest.
