The 1797 Draped Bust cent with a gripped edge carries an irregular edge treatment similar to the gripped edge found on certain 1797 half cents. The edge shows a pattern of incuse notches and raised pellets, less uniform than reeding but clearly the product of a mechanical device. The cause is debated: the planchets may have been processed through edge equipment intended for another denomination, or the Mint may have been experimenting with alternative edge treatments.

The Gripped Edge 1797 large cent is a recognized variety in the Sheldon catalog and is scarce. Survival rates are lower than for the plain-edge 1797 varieties, and the edge detail is the sole distinguishing feature. Identification requires handling the coin or trusting the certification service's attribution, since edge detail is not captured well in standard photographs.

For collectors of early large cents, the Gripped Edge is one of the period's production anomalies that document the Mint's evolving approach to edge treatments.
