About this coinHistory

The 1798 Draped Bust cent with a Reverse of 1795 represents one of the longer-surviving cross-era die pairings in the early cent series. A reverse die cut in the 1795 style was still in use three years later, paired with an 1798 obverse. The die had clearly been well-made and carefully maintained to last that long in production.

The Reverse of 1795 is identified by its wreath and lettering characteristics, which differ from the standard 1798-era reverse dies. The distinction requires reference comparison for confident identification. Among 1798 large cent varieties, the Reverse of 1795 is a minority die marriage, struck from a single surviving reverse die before it was finally retired.

Surviving examples are scarce relative to 1798 cents struck from contemporary reverse dies. The variety carries a premium among Sheldon variety collectors, who catalog every known die marriage and track survival rates for each. For a general date collector, the reverse type is a secondary consideration after acquiring the date itself.
