The 1798/7 overdate large cent was struck from a die originally engraved with the date 1797. Rather than discard the die, the Mint punched a new 8 over the existing 7, creating a composite final digit where traces of both numerals are visible. The underlying 7 shows through beneath and to the right of the 8, and on well-preserved examples, the overdate is clearly identifiable under magnification.
Overdates were a practical economy at the early Mint. Dies took time and skill to produce, and the Mint conserved them whenever possible. If a die from the previous year still had working life, updating the final digit was faster than cutting a new die from scratch. The practice produced some of the most collected varieties in early American coinage, because the evidence of the date change is permanently embedded in the coin.
The 1798/7 is a popular variety among large cent collectors. The overdate is visually interesting and identifiable on most coins above Good, making it accessible to collectors who enjoy variety attribution. Pricing carries a premium over standard 1798 cents, with the premium increasing in grades where the overdate detail is sharpest.
Certification services attribute the overdate, and a confirmed 1798/7 on a PCGS or NGC holder simplifies the purchase for collectors not yet confident in reading overpunched digits. For those who prefer to attribute their own coins, the 1798/7 is one of the more straightforward overdates to identify in the early cent series.
