About this coinHistory

The 1936 Brilliant proof Buffalo nickel replaced the Satin format after the Mint recognized that collectors preferred the traditional brilliant mirror finish over the matte-like satin approach. Philadelphia struck approximately 4,118 Brilliant proofs in 1936, a significantly higher mintage than the Satin version and reflecting stronger collector demand for the brilliant format.

The brilliant finish produces deep mirror fields, frosted devices on well-struck coins, and the characteristic contrast that collectors associate with traditional proof coinage. The 1936 Brilliant proof restored familiar aesthetic expectations after the 1913-1916 matte proof experiment and the brief 1936 Satin attempt, establishing the brilliant format that would continue for the final two years of Buffalo nickel proof production.

Surviving populations are adequate for specialist demand. PR64 through PR66 examples are available through specialist channels and major auction houses, and Cameo designations command additional premiums on coins with strong frosted device contrast against the mirror fields. The 1936 Brilliant proof is the more common of the two 1936 sub-types and is acquired more readily than the scarce Satin version.
