About this coinHistory

The 1936 Satin proof Buffalo nickel represents the first year of resumed Buffalo nickel proof production after the 1916-1935 hiatus. When proof coinage returned in 1936, the Mint initially produced satin proofs with a matte-like finish similar to the 1913-1916 format, before switching to brilliant proofs later in the year (cataloged separately). The Satin 1936 proof is thus the "first issue" of the resumed proof program and is collected as a distinct variety from the Brilliant proofs of the same year.

Mintage estimates for the 1936 Satin proof are approximately 200 to 300 coins, making it significantly scarcer than the Brilliant proofs of the year. The satin finish proved unpopular with collectors, leading the Mint to switch to brilliant proofs within months. The two formats together represent the 1936 Buffalo nickel proof production, and both are required for complete sub-series representation.

Identification requires comparing the surface finish to reference images of both Satin and Brilliant 1936 proofs. The Satin version shows matte-like fields without the deep mirror reflection of the Brilliant proofs, while retaining the sharp device detail characteristic of proof production. Specialist dealers and major auction houses can attribute the variety, and certified examples from PCGS or NGC provide the most reliable confirmation.
