About this coinHistory

Philadelphia's 1939 Reverse of 1938 proof Jefferson nickel used the original reverse hub for the early part of the year's proof production. The sub-type is distinguished from the Reverse of 1940 proof by the same die characteristics that separate the circulation strike varieties: softer step detail, slightly less sharp column definition, and the specific hub positioning that defined the 1938 reverse.

Surviving populations are limited compared to the Reverse of 1940 proof, and specialists building complete Jefferson proof sets with reverse sub-types pursue both 1939 versions. The Reverse of 1938 proof is the scarcer of the two and commands meaningful premiums in high grades. PR64 and PR65 examples appear at major auctions periodically, and higher-grade specimens with Cameo contrast are particularly prized.

For collectors focused on major Jefferson nickel milestones, the 1939 reverse sub-types represent the first significant variety challenge in the proof sub-series. Along with the 1940 Reverse of 1938 proof (a later transitional piece), they document the refinement of Jefferson nickel die design during the series' early years.
