About this coinHistory

The 1942-P Wartime Silver proof Jefferson nickel is one of the more historically significant proof issues in the series. Philadelphia struck 27,600 proofs with the new silver composition in 1942, making it the first proof issue to carry the P mintmark and the only Wartime Silver proof nickel (proofs were discontinued after 1942 and not resumed until 1950, by which time the Wartime Silver composition had been abandoned).

The coin is distinguished by the large reverse mintmark above Monticello, visible prominently on the proof's mirror surface. Strike quality is typically sharp, though the manganese content in the alloy affected the strike characteristics slightly compared to the standard copper-nickel proofs of the same year. Cameo contrast is available on well-preserved examples, and Deep Cameo pieces command significant premiums at major auctions.

For collectors, the 1942-P Wartime Silver proof is both a historical first (first P mintmark proof) and a unique issue (only Wartime Silver proof nickel). The combination gives it particular collector significance, and specialists building complete Jefferson nickel proof sets treat it as an essential acquisition. Heritage Auctions has sold PR67 examples in the $300 to $800 range, with higher-grade Cameo pieces commanding significantly more.
