About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 104,060,000 Wartime Silver Jefferson nickels in 1943, a massive production year that reflected the facility's continued role in Wartime Silver production following its 1942 start. The coin is abundant in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics are generally strong, and Full Steps examples exist in adequate numbers for specialist demand at modest premiums.

The 1943-S is typical of mid-war San Francisco Jefferson production at its peak quality. Collectors building complete Wartime Silver sets acquire the 1943-S without difficulty, and type collectors can select from abundant Mint State examples at various grade levels. The large reverse mintmark above Monticello identifies the silver composition immediately.

San Francisco's 1943 output contributed significantly to the total Wartime Silver production across all three mints (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco). The coins circulated heavily during the war and into the postwar period, though many were eventually recovered by the Treasury during the silver reclamation program of the 1960s and 1970s. Surviving Mint State populations reflect both contemporary preservation and later numismatic collection efforts.
