About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 119,150,000 Wartime Silver Jefferson nickels in 1944, continuing the high-volume production that characterized the mid-war Jefferson nickel series. The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics are generally strong, and Full Steps examples exist in adequate numbers for specialist demand at modest premiums.

The 1944-P is typical of mid-war Jefferson production at its peak output. Collectors building complete Wartime Silver sets acquire the coin without difficulty, and the large reverse mintmark above Monticello identifies the silver composition immediately. The coin documents the continuation of the Wartime Silver program through the middle year of American involvement in World War II.

1944 was the year of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June and the beginning of the final Allied push toward Germany. The Wartime Silver nickels struck that year circulated through a country increasingly confident of eventual victory while still mobilizing for the massive military operations of the late war period. For soldiers overseas, American coins were sometimes kept as souvenirs of home for preservation, and Mint State examples that resurfaced in estate sales decades later often came from servicemen's collections.
