About this coinHistory

The 1949-D D/S Repunched Mintmark Jefferson nickel shows a D mintmark struck over a previous S mintmark, with traces of the underlying S visible beneath the final D. The variety was created when a Denver Mint working die received an S punch (probably a mistake with an S intended for a San Francisco die) before being corrected with a D overpunch. The result is a coin showing both mintmarks, with the D dominant and the S visible through careful examination.

Identification requires examining the mintmark under magnification. The diagnostic trace of the S appears within or adjacent to the final D, where the curved forms of the earlier mintmark are visible beneath the straight lines of the overpunched D. The variety is similar in character to the 1938-D D/S Buffalo nickel, though the Jefferson version lacks the Buffalo's mainstream collector recognition.

The 1949-D D/S is a recognized variety in Jefferson nickel specialist references and commands meaningful premiums over the standard 1949-D. Surviving populations are limited, and Mint State examples with clear diagnostic features are particularly prized. PCGS and NGC both attribute the variety on certified examples, providing the standard for serious collectors pursuing it at premium pricing.

The mintmark punching error reflects routine Mint procedures where dies were prepared at Philadelphia before being shipped to branch mints with the appropriate mintmark. Occasionally a die received the wrong initial mintmark and required correction, and the 1949-D D/S captures one such correction moment in physical form.
