About this coinHistory

The 1954-S S Over D Repunched Mintmark Jefferson nickel shows an S mintmark struck over a previous D mintmark, with traces of the underlying D visible beneath the final S. The variety was created when a San Francisco Mint working die received a D punch (probably a mistake with a D intended for a Denver die) before being corrected with an S overpunch. The result is a coin showing both mintmarks, with the S dominant and the D visible through careful examination.

Identification requires examining the mintmark under magnification. The diagnostic trace of the D appears within or adjacent to the final S, where the straight lines of the earlier mintmark are visible beneath the curves of the overpunched S. The variety is parallel in character to the 1949-D D/S and similar mintmark errors in other Jefferson nickel years.

The 1954-S S/D is a recognized variety in Jefferson nickel specialist references and commands meaningful premiums over the standard 1954-S. Surviving populations are limited, and Mint State examples with clear diagnostic features are particularly prized. PCGS and NGC both attribute the variety on certified examples.

The mintmark punching error reflects the routine die preparation procedures at Philadelphia in which working dies were stamped with mintmarks before shipment to branch mints. Occasional mistakes required correction through overpunching, and the 1954-S S/D captures one such correction in the final year of the pre-gap San Francisco Jefferson production sequence.
