About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,220,733 proof Jefferson nickels in 1971, continuing the modern S-mint proof production. The coin is common by proof standards and available in every grade. Strike quality is typically sharp, with mirror fields, frosted devices, and crisp detail on well-preserved examples.

The standard 1971-S proof is distinct from the famous 1971 No S Proof variety (cataloged separately), which shows no mintmark where the S should appear. The vast majority of 1971 proofs carry the normal S mintmark and are acquired routinely by collectors building complete Jefferson nickel proof sets.

Cameo contrast is available on 1971-S proofs at modest premiums, and Deep Cameo pieces command significantly higher prices at major auctions. The coin is representative of early-1970s S-mint proof Jefferson nickel production at its standard quality level.
