About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 181,772,000 Jefferson nickels in 1975, continuing the 1970s no-mintmark Philadelphia production. The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics are generally strong, and Full Steps examples exist in adequate numbers for specialist demand at modest premiums.

1975 was the year Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces in April, ending the long American involvement in Vietnam. The evacuation of Americans and South Vietnamese allies from the rooftop of the American embassy became an iconic image of the war's closure. The Church Committee began investigating abuses by the CIA and FBI, leading to major reforms in federal intelligence oversight.

The Jefferson nickels struck in 1975 circulated through the final closure of the Vietnam War era and the beginnings of the Bicentennial celebration preparations that would dominate 1976. For ordinary users, the nickel remained constant while the country processed the implications of the war's end and began looking forward to the upcoming 200th anniversary of American independence.
