About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 1979-S Type 1 proof Jefferson nickel uses the "filled S" mintmark style that had been standard for S-mint proofs since 1968. The Type 1 mintmark appears as a somewhat blobby S where the openings of the letter are partially filled with metal. Most 1979 proof Jefferson nickels are Type 1 examples, as the Type 1 mintmark was used for the earlier portion of the year's proof production.

The coin is common by proof standards and available in every grade. Strike quality is typically sharp, with mirror fields, frosted devices, and crisp detail on well-preserved examples. Cameo contrast is available at modest premiums, and Deep Cameo pieces command higher prices.

Midway through 1979, the Mint introduced a Type 2 "clear S" mintmark (cataloged separately) that showed sharper definition and open letter forms. The two mintmark styles create a distinct variety pair for 1979 proof collectors, with the Type 1 representing the standard (more common) sub-type and Type 2 the scarcer variant.
