About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 1981-S Type 1 proof Jefferson nickel uses the standard mintmark style carried over from 1980 and the early portion of 1981 production. Most 1981 proof Jefferson nickels are Type 1 examples, as the Type 1 mintmark was used for the majority of the year's proof production before the Type 2 mintmark change.

The coin is common by proof standards and available in every grade. Strike quality is typically sharp, with mirror fields, frosted devices, and crisp detail on well-preserved examples. Cameo contrast is available at modest premiums.

Like 1979, 1981 saw the introduction of a Type 2 "clear S" mintmark (cataloged separately) that replaced the Type 1 partway through the year. The two mintmark styles create another variety pair for proof collectors, with the Type 1 as the more common standard and the Type 2 as the scarcer later sub-type.
