About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 561,615,000 Jefferson nickels in 1983, continuing substantial early-1980s production. The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State. Strike characteristics are generally improved over the poor-quality 1982 issues, though still not as strong as mid-1980s production would become.

Collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets acquire the 1983-P without difficulty. The coin represents the recovery from the 1982 strike quality low point, with Full Steps examples becoming more available though still requiring careful selection.

1983 was the year Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars) and the year 241 U.S. Marines were killed by a suicide bomber in Beirut. The economic recovery was beginning in earnest, with the stock market rising and inflation finally under control. The Jefferson nickels struck that year circulated through the beginning of what would become the prolonged economic expansion of the Reagan era.
