About this coinHistory

The 2005-P Western Waters ("Ocean in View") Jefferson nickel is the fourth and final design of the Westward Journey Nickel Series, depicting William Clark's exclamation upon reaching the Pacific Ocean: "Ocean in view! O! The joy!" The reverse design by Joe Fitzgerald shows the view of the Pacific Ocean as Clark might have seen it, with the inscription "Ocean in View! O! The Joy!" that Clark wrote in his journal on November 7, 1805.

Clark's exact words, preserved in his expedition journal, captured the moment when the Corps of Discovery first saw the Pacific after their long journey from St. Louis. Philadelphia struck 394,080,000 coins with this reverse. The coin is abundant in all grades and readily available in Mint State.

The Western Waters design completes the four-coin Westward Journey Nickel Series: Peace Medal (2004), Keelboat (2004), Bison (2005), and Western Waters (2005). Collectors building complete Westward Journey sets acquire all four as the defining reverse designs of the 2004-2005 program.
