About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 2,169,561 proof Jefferson nickels in 2008, continuing the modern S-mint proof production. Despite the financial crisis that defined the year, the Mint maintained proof production at near-normal levels because proof coinage operates on advance subscription orders independent of current commercial demand. Collectors who had ordered the 2008 proof set received their coins on schedule even as broader Mint operations were adjusting to the recession.

The coin is common by proof standards and available in every grade through standard collector channels. Strike quality is sharp and consistent, with the Cameo and Deep Cameo designations essentially universal on modern proofs. The 2008-S proof was distributed in the year's United States Mint Proof Set, which contained the cent through dollar denominations including the year's State Quarters.

For collectors building Jefferson nickel proof sets, the 2008-S is a routine recent entry. Like other modern S-mint proofs, it is among the most affordable Jefferson nickel proofs in Gem grades and presents no particular collector challenges.
