About this coinHistory

The 2009-D Satin Finish Jefferson nickel was included in the year's United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set. Like the 2009-P Satin Finish, it represents a meaningful proportion of total 2009-D output because of the sharply reduced circulation strike production that defined the recession year. The 2009-D circulation strike mintage of 46.8 million was the lowest in decades, and the Satin Finish version exists in roughly the same proportion to that base as in other Satin Finish years.

Production was limited to what was needed for Mint Set assembly. The 2009 set documented the recession-era Mint operations and is collected today partly for the unusual production circumstances and partly for its position in the larger Satin Finish sub-series. Loose examples (broken out of original packaging) are available through specialist channels at modest premiums over standard 2009-D business strikes.

Collectors building comprehensive modern Jefferson nickel collections acquire the 2009-D Satin Finish as a distinct entry alongside the 2009-P Satin Finish. The two coins together represent the year's special finish issues and pair with the recession-era circulation strikes to document one of the most distinctive years in modern Jefferson nickel collecting.
