About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 450,000,000 Jefferson nickels in 2011, continuing the post-recession production recovery that had begun in 2010. Mint operations were stabilizing as the broader economy improved, though both Philadelphia and Denver were still producing well below the pre-2008 peaks. 2011 was also the first year after the discontinuation of the Satin Finish program; the Mint Sets returned to standard burnished finishes for all denominations including the Jefferson nickel.

The coin is common in all grades and readily available in Mint State at minimal premiums. Strike quality follows the typical pattern for early 2010s Jefferson nickel production. The Mint had refined hub maintenance procedures during the recession years, and 2011 production benefited from these improvements with reasonably consistent Monticello detail across the year's output.

For collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets, the 2011-P is a routine acquisition. The coin marks the post-Satin Finish transition and the return to a single-finish Mint Set program, making 2011 a quiet but significant year in the modern Jefferson nickel sub-series.
