About this coinHistory

The 2018-S Reverse Proof Jefferson nickel was produced as part of the 50th Anniversary Silver Reverse Proof Set, which featured all denominations in a reverse proof format. Reverse proof coins invert the normal proof presentation: the fields are frosted while the devices are mirror-polished, producing a dramatic visual effect distinct from both standard proofs and business strikes.

Only 199,116 sets were produced, making the 2018-S Reverse Proof a modern scarce issue. The coin is typically acquired from broken-up sets, as the Mint did not offer the individual coin for direct sale. PCGS and NGC both certify the variety, and the Reverse Proof designation is noted on the slab labels.

The 2018-S Reverse Proof represents the Mint's occasional use of the reverse proof format for special commemorative sets. Collectors building comprehensive modern Jefferson nickel collections acquire the coin as a distinct entry from the standard 2018-S proof.
