About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 1,178,800,000 Jefferson nickels in 2021, the second year of pandemic-era high production responding to the continuing coin shortage. The coin is abundant in all grades and readily available in Mint State at minimal premiums. Strike quality follows the typical pattern for early-2020s Jefferson nickel production.

The 2021 mintage continued the elevated production pattern that had begun in 2020 as the Mint worked to maintain coin circulation during the pandemic's disruption of normal commerce. By 2021 the worst of the coin shortage had eased, but the Mint continued high-volume nickel production to rebuild bank stocks and maintain reserves.

For collectors building complete Jefferson nickel sets, the 2021-P is a routine modern acquisition. Full Steps examples are achievable through specialist channels.
