About this coinHistory

The 1857 proof Flying Eagle cent was the first proof small cent produced for sale to collectors as part of the denomination's regular production. The Mint struck a small number of proofs using polished dies and carefully prepared planchets, producing coins with mirrored fields and sharply defined devices. The proof finish on the copper-nickel alloy is distinctive: a bright, reflective surface that contrasts with the satin or matte appearance of circulation strikes.

Proof mintage for 1857 is estimated at approximately 485 coins, based on the number of proof sets the Mint reported selling. The figure is small enough to make the 1857 proof Flying Eagle a genuinely scarce coin, though not as rare as the proof-only issues of earlier denominations. By the late 1850s, the Mint was moving toward a more organized approach to proof production, with published prices and a growing customer base. The 1857 proof cent was part of that emerging system.

Surviving 1857 proofs show the full detail that the circulation strikes often lack. The striking pressure applied to proofs was greater and more controlled than production strikes, which means the opposing high-relief areas (eagle's breast and wreath center) are fully impressed on proofs even when they are soft on business strikes. A proof 1857 is the best way to see the Flying Eagle design as Longacre intended it, with every feather defined and every leaf in the wreath sharp.
