About this coinHistory

The 1858 Large Letters proof Flying Eagle cent was struck as part of the Mint's proof production for the final year of the design. Proof mintage for 1858 is estimated at approximately 200 coins for the Large Letters variety, a figure that places it among the scarcer proof small cents of the era. The proof was struck from polished dies with extra striking pressure, resolving the strike-quality problems that plagued the circulation issues. Every device is fully impressed: the eagle's breast feathers, the tail feathers, the wreath details, and the lettering are all sharp in a way that business strikes rarely achieve.

The 1858 Large Letters proof is collected as the proof representation of the more common letter size. It pairs naturally with the 1857 proof and the 1856 pattern to form a complete three-coin proof set of the Flying Eagle design. The copper-nickel alloy takes a brilliant proof finish that is visually striking. Mirrored fields reflect light cleanly, and the contrast between the reflective field and the frosted devices (on early strikes from fresh dies) creates a cameo effect that commands premiums when present.

As the final year of a short-lived design, the 1858 proof carries terminal-date appeal. The Flying Eagle was produced for only two years of regular coinage (1857-1858), making it one of the shortest series in American numismatics. Proof examples from both years are needed to complete the proof set, and the 1858 Large Letters is one of two proof varieties for the final year.
