About this coinHistory

The 1864 Indian Head cent in bronze composition marks one of the most significant changes in the series: the switch from copper-nickel (88% copper, 12% nickel) to bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc). The change, authorized by the Act of April 22, 1864, was driven by multiple factors. The copper-nickel alloy was hard on dies, causing excessive wear and making it difficult to achieve sharp strikes. The nickel content was also expensive. Bronze was softer, cheaper, and easier to work with. The new bronze cents were thinner and lighter (3.11 grams versus 4.67 grams for the copper-nickel version) but retained the same 19-millimeter diameter.

The visual difference is dramatic. Copper-nickel Indian Heads are pale, almost white. Bronze Indian Heads are brown or red-brown, with a warmth that the earlier coins lack entirely. The transition happened mid-year in 1864, meaning both compositions were produced during the same calendar year. The bronze version quickly became the standard, and the copper-nickel alloy was not used on cents again.

The 1864 Bronze is readily available in circulated grades. The mintage was substantial, and the coin circulated alongside the older copper-nickel cents that were still in the public's hands (or hoards). Good to Fine examples are affordable. The 1864 Bronze is the natural starting point for the long bronze run of Indian Head cents that would continue through 1909.
