The 1864 "L on Ribbon" variety is one of the most collected issues in the Indian Head series. The letter L, representing designer James B. Longacre's initial, appears on the ribbon behind Liberty's ear at the lower edge of the headdress. The L was added to the design partway through 1864 bronze production, meaning early 1864 bronze cents lack the initial and later ones have it. The L would remain on all subsequent Indian Head cents through 1909.
The timing of the addition is significant. Longacre added his initial to the design in the same year the composition changed to bronze, which means 1864 produced three distinct varieties for the cent: copper-nickel (no L), bronze without L, and bronze with L. Each represents a different stage of the year's production, and each is collected separately.
The L on Ribbon variety is classified as a semi-key because it is scarcer than the standard 1864 Bronze. The initial was added partway through the year, so fewer L-on-Ribbon coins were struck than no-L coins. The L itself is small and can be difficult to see on worn coins. On a coin in Good condition, the ribbon area may be too worn to confirm the L's presence. Fine or better is the grade threshold where confident identification becomes possible without magnification.
The variety carries a meaningful premium over the standard 1864 Bronze in all grades. Certification services note the L on Ribbon attribution on the holder, which is important because the price difference between the two varieties is large enough to incentivize misattribution. A collector paying the L premium should either be confident in their ability to see the initial or rely on the grading service's confirmation.
