About this coinHistory

The 1865 Indian Head cent was the first full year of production in the new bronze composition. The "Fancy 5" variety refers to the style of the numeral 5 in the date, which has a more elaborate, curved serif at the top than the "Plain 5" version. The distinction is in the specific numeral punch the engraver selected. The Fancy 5 accounts for a portion of the year's production and is one of two recognized date styles.

The Civil War ended in April 1865 with Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Lincoln was assassinated five days later. The year that began in war ended in reconstruction, grief, and economic uncertainty. Coins began returning to circulation as the hoarding crisis eased, though the process took months. The 1865 cent circulated in a nation putting itself back together, one transaction at a time.

Surviving examples are available in circulated grades. The bronze composition produces the warm brown or red-brown surfaces that would characterize the denomination for the rest of the Indian Head series. A well-preserved Fine with even color is a solid representative of the immediate post-war era.
