The 1866 proof Indian Head cent was struck in a mintage of approximately 725 proofs. The Mint's proof production had stabilized by the mid-1860s into a routine annual operation. Collectors ordered proof sets by mail, and the Mint fulfilled orders throughout the year. The 1866 proof shows the bronze composition in its mature proof form: deeply mirrored fields, sharp device detail, and surfaces that range from brilliant red to deep brown depending on storage conditions and the passage of time.
The Reconstruction era did not diminish collector interest in proof coins. If anything, the growing stability of the post-war period allowed the numismatic hobby to expand. New collectors entered the field, auction houses held regular sales, and the Mint's proof program served as the primary source of new material for the hobby.
