The 1867 proof Indian Head cent was produced in a mintage of approximately 625 proofs. The proof shows the mature bronze design with mirrored fields and sharp devices. By the late 1860s, the Mint's proof production was well-established and the collector base was growing steadily. Proof sets were available by mail order at published prices, and the system functioned without the informality that had characterized proof production in earlier decades.
Surviving 1867 proofs appear at auction regularly. Color is the primary value differentiator among proof Indian Head cents of this period. A proof with original red surfaces commands a multiple of the price of a brown-toned example in the same grade. Red-brown, showing partial original color, falls between the two. The 1867 proof is collected within the annual proof sequence and is neither the rarest nor the most common of the post-war proofs.
