About this coinHistory

The 1883 Indian Head cent was struck in a mintage of approximately 45.6 million coins, close to the production levels seen during the Civil War hoarding crisis. The high output reflected strong commercial demand for the cent denomination. The Brooklyn Bridge opened in May 1883, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn and symbolizing the engineering ambition of the Gilded Age. The cent was the coin of the toll booth, the newsstand, the peanut vendor on the bridge.
