About this coinHistory

The 1884 Indian Head cent was produced in a mintage of approximately 23.3 million coins, a moderate output by 1880s standards. The coin circulated during the first administration of Grover Cleveland, the only president to serve non-consecutive terms. The cent remained the smallest denomination, handling the micro-transactions of an economy where a penny still bought a stick of candy, a newspaper in some cities, or passage on a streetcar.
