About this coinHistory

The 1893 Indian Head cent was produced in approximately 46.6 million coins. The Panic of 1893 struck in May, triggering the worst economic depression the country had experienced since the 1870s. Banks failed, railroads collapsed, and unemployment surged. The cent, already the coin of the working class, became even more important as purchasing power contracted and every penny counted. The 1893 circulated through the first months of a crisis that would last four years.
