About this coinHistory

The 1901 Indian Head cent was produced in approximately 79.6 million coins, surpassing the record set just a year earlier. President McKinley was assassinated in September 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, bringing Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency. Roosevelt would later commission Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign American gold coinage, a project that eventually led to the redesign of other denominations including the cent. The 1901 is a common date.
