The 1916 proof Lincoln cent was the last matte proof issue. After 1916, proof cent production was suspended and would not resume until 1936, when the Mint adopted a brilliant mirror finish that replaced the earlier satin texture. Approximately 1,050 proofs were struck, making the 1916 among the rarest in the matte proof sequence. The 1916 proof is the terminal issue of the matte proof era, and a collector building the 1909-1916 proof set finishes here.
