About this coinHistory

The 1936 Brilliant proof Lincoln cent marks the resumption of proof production after a twenty-year hiatus (1917-1935). The new proofs used a brilliant, mirror-like finish rather than the matte or satin surface of the 1909-1916 proofs. The change in finish was dramatic. Where the early proofs had a soft, textured look, the 1936 Brilliants are sharply reflective with deep, glass-like fields. Approximately 5,569 proofs were struck, beginning a continuous proof production run that would last through the present day (with a brief suspension during World War II).

The 1936 Brilliant proof is the first of the "modern" Lincoln cent proofs and is collected as the starting point of the brilliant proof sequence. The proof shows Brenner's portrait in crisp, mirrored relief, with every detail of the wheat stalks on the reverse sharply defined.
