The 1936 Satin proof is a second proof variety for the year, using a different finish from the Brilliant version. The Satin proof has a softer, less reflective surface, intermediate between the matte proofs of 1909-1916 and the brilliant mirror proofs. Whether the Satin finish was an intentional alternative or an early attempt at the brilliant finish that was refined during the year is debated. The Satin proof is scarcer than the Brilliant and is collected as a distinct variety.
