About this coinHistory

In 1960, sharp-eyed collectors noticed that Philadelphia's Lincoln cents came in two varieties: a Large Date and a Small Date. The difference is visible in the size and shape of the numerals in "1960" on the obverse. The Large Date version features thicker, more prominent digits and was the more common of the two Philadelphia issues. The combined mintage for all 1960 Philadelphia varieties totaled about 588 million coins.

The distinction between Large Date and Small Date generated genuine excitement in the collecting community during 1960. Coin dealers reported brisk business as hobbyists sorted through rolls looking for one variety or the other. The 1960 Large Date is the more readily available of the two and poses no challenge for collectors assembling a complete Memorial set.
