About this coinHistory

Denver produced over 1.75 billion Lincoln cents in 1961, the largest output from any single mint that year. The "D" mintmark sits below the date on the obverse. These coins entered circulation across the country during a year when the Cold War intensified and the Space Race accelerated.

President Kennedy challenged the nation to land a man on the moon before the decade ended, setting the stage for years of ambitious spending and technological development. Meanwhile, the humble cent continued its role as the backbone of small transactions. The 1961-D is plentiful and inexpensive, a standard issue for any Memorial cent collection.
