About this coinHistory

The Denver Mint produced a remarkable 3.79 billion Lincoln cents in 1964, making it one of the highest-mintage coins in American history. The Mint was running at full capacity in response to the nationwide coin shortage. Americans were hoarding coins, partly due to speculation that silver denominations would soon be debased (which proved correct) and partly out of a collecting frenzy.

President Johnson publicly urged citizens to return coins to circulation. The 1964-D cent bears the familiar "D" mintmark below the date. Despite its enormous mintage, it circulated heavily and well-worn examples are the norm. Mint-state pieces are also abundant because many rolls were set aside by speculators. The 1964-D is one of the most common coins in the entire Lincoln cent series.
