About this coinHistory

The San Francisco Mint struck over 525 million cents for circulation in 1971, bearing the "S" mintmark. San Francisco was increasingly focusing on proof coinage, but it continued to produce circulation strikes in smaller quantities than the other two mints.

The 1971-S circulation cent is readily available in all grades. It does not carry a significant premium over Philadelphia or Denver issues. San Francisco's dual role in producing both business strikes and proofs during this period adds a layer of interest for those who study Mint operations.
