The 1972 Doubled Die Obverse is among the most famous error coins in all of American numismatics. The doubling on this variety is dramatic, bold, and visible without any magnification. Every letter in "LIBERTY," every digit in "1972," and the full inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" show strong, clearly separated secondary images. The effect is immediately obvious, even to someone who has never collected a coin.
The error occurred during the die-making process when a working die received a second, misaligned impression from the hub. The resulting die produced coins with doubled obverse lettering while the reverse remained normal. Unlike many subtle varieties that require a loupe, the 1972 DDO announces itself at arm's length. The Mint did not catch the error before a substantial number of coins entered circulation through the Philadelphia facility.
Estimates of surviving examples range from several thousand to perhaps 20,000, making the 1972 DDO far more available than the 1969-S DDO but still scarce by any reasonable standard. The coin catalogs for hundreds of dollars in circulated grades and can reach into the thousands for mint-state specimens. In high-grade uncirculated condition with original red surfaces, five-figure prices have been achieved at auction.
Counterfeits and coins with lesser forms of doubling (machine doubling, die deterioration) are frequently misidentified as the genuine variety. Authentication by a reputable grading service is strongly recommended. The 1972 Doubled Die Obverse remains a cornerstone coin for collectors of Lincoln cents and one of the most recognizable varieties in all of U.S. coinage.
