About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Mint struck over 3.72 billion cents in 1973, a year when the Watergate scandal consumed Washington. Senate hearings began in May, and the nation watched as witnesses described a pattern of political espionage and cover-up at the highest levels of government. Vice President Agnew resigned in October over a separate corruption scandal. The Arab oil embargo that fall triggered gas lines and an energy crisis.

The 1973 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark and was produced in vast quantities. It is common in all grades and inexpensive to acquire. The year's turbulent politics left no mark on the coin's design.
